Philips PHDTV1 OTA HD Antenna

PHDTV1 - OTA Antenna - Works Great With DIRECTV Or DISH Network Receivers:

13Donuts visitors sent us tons of questions about the Philips PHDTV1 HDTV OTA ("Off The Air") antenna!  The number of questions was surprising!  Guess the thought of a large, gangly, unsightly metal thing in your living room worries folks.  To show this isn't the case - to show the PHDTV1 antenna is small, sleek and easily hid from view - we've posted the pictures below.

The satellite receiver boxes provided by either DIRECTV or DISH Network come ready made with an input jack for an OTA antenna - just screw this antenna's coaxial cable connection into the jack and you're up!

Silver Sensor:

The Philips PHDTV1 HDTV OTA Antenna is also known as the "Silver Sensor" HD OTA antenna - because it has a microscopic amount of silver, embedded in the wingtips of the foil (the shiny part that catches the signal) to make it work better.  PHDTV1 just doesn't roll off the tongue... we wish the Philips folks would have renamed it better (they acquired it's design from Zenith and relabeled it theirs) had named this great antenna as the "Silver Sensor" instead.

PHDTV1 - OTA Antenna - Pictures:

PHDTV1 Box as Shipped
Unopened product box.  Note these pictures were taken when the Zenith label was being used for this antenna, it's now made under the Philips brand name.

All the pictures here are thumbnails - click each to see the larger version.  We've left the large versions VERY large to help answer questions - they average 250-400kB in size - sorry in advance for loading speeds, but it seems everyone wanted deep details.

Pictures from the Philips literature we found elsewhere on the Internet all lacked any perspective elements - you can't tell from their pictures what size the thing is!  For these pictures we've prepped for you, we've chosen function over beauty.  We stuck an old 12" ruler and a 13Donuts coffee cup in each picture for size and perspective - hope it helps.

PHDTV1 Instructions on Back of Box
Assembly instructions on the back of the box - takes about 10 seconds to assemble, no tools required and so simple that anyone can do it.
PHDTV1 HD OTA Antenna Assembed - Top View
Assembled with foil (the shiny part) in horizontal orientation.
PHDTV1 HD OTA Antenna Assembed - Angle View
Same horizontal assembly, angle view.
PHDTV1 HD OTA Antenna Assembed - Side View
Same assembly, side view.  The dimensions from the manual say 9.5"H x 13"W x 13.5"D - that's correct for the horizontal orientation.
PHDTV1 HD OTA Antenna - Positioning
Where the antenna foil meets the upper part of the mount, there's a square socket that the foil tip slides into.  Picture shows me withdrawing foil (no tools needed) and rotating it 45 degrees as I switch it to vertical mount and re-insert it into the stand.
PHDTV1 HD OTA Antenna Assembed Vertically Is Skinny
Vertical foil orientation - front view.  Very nice the way you can easily orient the antenna horizontally or vertically depending on reception and how you may be placing it in your TV area to look nice.  The vertical orientation allows many people to stick it behind some books on a shelf or behind a plant or something - it's so skinny this way!  When vertically oriented, you might also be able to hide it behind your entertainment center or even behind the TV itself.  You'll need to adjust placement for best HDTV OTA reception, but this antenna's setup is very easy!
PHDTV1 HD OTA Antenna Assembed Vertically Is Taller
Obviously, it's taller when positioned vertically.  I measured it at roughly 13.5"H when oriented vertically.
PHDTV1 HD OTA Antenna - View of Coaxial Connection
Vertical foil - rear view - shows the coaxial cable connection.  Coax cable that it comes with is 6 feet long.  Mine measures 6' 1" including the length of the connectors at each end.  Keeping the cable short, gives better reception.  Six feet is long enough to give you options on placement and orientation.  If you need a longer cable, it is FAR better to buy a new one than to connect 2 cables together.  Remember, the signal from an OTA antenna is very weak.  Try to keep the cable as short as possible and keep the number of cable connections to a minimum.  If you buy a longer coax cable, look for one with gold tipped connections (like the one that comes with the PHDTV1).

PHDTV1 - OTA Antenna - Where To Buy:

The Philips PHDTV1 HDTV Indoor Antenna has received very good reviews at Amazon.  We've shopped around the Internet for the best price many times (we often use them as thank you gifts to our visitors and friends - we've bought more than a dozen).  We buy them from Amazon for ~$23 (~$28 including shipping in our area).
